| The perceived differences in South High and Young
High were vast. As the beginning of the 1976-77 school
year and the inevitable merger approached, fear of the
unknown loomed. After all, the spirited rivalry between
our two schools had lasted a quarter of a century. We
had grown up as either Rockets or Yellowjackets.
Very quickly, we all found that we had far more in
common than those perceived differences. Led by the
senior class, the Trojan spirit was born. We reached
across the proverbial aisle, forming bonds and life-long
friendships that continue to make South Knoxville a
better place even today.
South-Young only graduated fifteen classes, but the
Trojan spirit is alive. South-Doyle
graduated it's sixteenth in 2007, and that Cherokee
of theirs continues to embody all that was once the
Yellowjacket, the Rocket, the Trojan, the Doyle High
Pioneer and even a little bit of Holston Warrior.
